Gianluca Speranza aka Tankanza has defied the odds and won back-to-back Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) main events.
Just 12 months after taking down one of PokerStars’ biggest annual MTTs, the Austria-based Italian has done it again. In clinching his second SCOOP main event title, Speranza overcame a 662-entry field stacked with talent.
Indeed, on the final table alone, the online grinder had to outlast Nick Petrangelo and Dinesh Alt. However, despite the quality on show during the May 28th finale, Speranza kept his nerve.
Entering the final table as the reigning champion and one of the top stacks, Speranza held firm. As British pro Preben Stokkan became the first to fall, history looked to be in the making.
With Austria’s nailuj90 also making back-to-back SCOOP finales, a tantalizing climax was building. That anticipation was only heightened after Petrangelo, Korrinho and felipebeltra fell by the wayside.
However, with just five left, 2018 finalist nailuj90 lost his way. That elimination ended one dream but put Speranza another step closer to a SCOOP first.
Eventually, after Francisco Benitez and Alt exited in fourth and third respectively, a deal was struck. Although he wanted the title, Speranza also wanted to match his previous payout.
Unfortunately for him, with the money left and the deal agreed, he wasn’t able to do that.
However, once the betting was over, he did scoop an additional $100,000 to take his winnings over the $1 million mark.

When the lights went down and OMGitshunt’s avatar faded, the community reacted to Speranza’s impressive feat. For SCOOP’s host PokerStars, the victory was “arguably the most unlikely online poker result ever documented.”
Whatever superlatives people use to describe the win, Speranza’s name will go down in history as a back-to-back SCOOP champion.
With its spring fiesta making noise, PokerStars is keeping the MTT innovations coming with a special Sunday Storm.
Designed to celebrate the weekly event’s eighth anniversary, the operator is adding $1 million to the prizepool.
Set to take place on June 16, the $1 Million Sunday Storm will cost $11 to enter and bestow the winner with at least $100,000.
