Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey to Headline New $25K WPT Heads-Up Championship

It’s been a busy week for the World Poker Tour (WPT). As well as crowing champions online and offline, the tournament operator announced a new high stakes event.

The WPT Heads-Up Championship will feature some of poker’s biggest names, including Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan.

The four-day online event will cost $25,000 to enter and all the action will take place on mobile site, Poker King.

Top Pros Vying for WPT Crown on Poker King

Poker King announced the news on May 20 and, although details are scant, we know it will be a 32-player tournament.

It appears that entry will be by invite only as the organizers have created an NCAA-style bracket. From this, each player will play until they’re eliminated.

The single eliminate format is a departure from many of the high-stakes tournament we’ve seen in recent years.

By preventing players from re-entering, Poker King and the WPT are aiming to find the best heads-up Hold’em player. And, given that one-on-one matches are in vogue right now, the event is bound to generate a lot of interest.

The WPT Heads-Up Championship will run from June 18 to 22. Poker King will stream all of the action on Twitch and YouTube, and we can expect to see an all-star cast.

Poker King representatives Ivey and Dwan are the headline stars but they won’t be alone. Wealthy amateur Bill Perkins will be in the mix, as will Brad Owen, Nick Shulman, and Landon Tice.

The rest of the lineup should be announced in the coming day and we might see recent WPT Online winner Michael Addamo added to the list.

The Winners Keep on Coming

The WPT Online Series is currently taking place on Partypoker and Addamo entered the winner’s circle this week.

The Aussie pro recently won the $5,200 event and finished third in the $10,300 High Roller. He parlayed those victories into another on Wednesday.

This time he topped a field of 41 players to win the WPT Online Series $25,500 Super High Roller. Addamo’s winning run was made all the more impressive because of the players he had to beat.

Matthias Eibinger, Almedin Imsirovic, and Artur Martirosyan were just three of top-tier pros that made is through to the final table.

However, when all was said and done, it was Addamo who scooped the title and the $363,660 top prize.

We’ll now have to wait and see if he’s willing to reinvest $25,000 of that in the upcoming WPT Heads-Up Championship.
