Online poker in Pennsylvania is showing early signs of promise according to the state’s official online gaming revenue report.

With a full month of activity under their belts, PokerStars Pennsylvania and its live partner Mount Airy Casino reported earnings of $2,473,137.
As well as being the first indication of how online poker in Pennsylvania is performing, the data provides some interesting points of comparison.
Positives for Online Poker in Pennsylvania
According to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, online casino and poker revenue in Dec. 2019 was 10.3 percent higher than it was in Nov. 2019. Of the $10,624,699 generated, PokerStars and Mount Airy lead the way as the state’s top earners.
As per the report, the partnership raked in $4,032,194 from online slots, table games and poker. Next in revenue hierarchy was Rivers Casino Philadelphia and its online partner Rush Street Gaming with $2,970,022.
In terms of overall revenue, online slots topped the bill with total earnings of $5,570,585. Table games were next at $2,580,977 and online poker was third ($2,473,137).
That distribution is expected but the popularity of poker has exceeded expectations. When online slots and table game revenue for Mount Airy are combined, it totals $1,559,057 or, in comparative terms, almost $1 million less than online poker.
That’s an interesting dynamic and one that few would have predicted. Although direct comparisons are tricky due to different operating conditions, PokerStars New Jersey raked $540,425 in Dec. 2019.
For clarity, PokerStars NJ is part of FOX Bet, which operates under the Resorts Digital Gaming license alongside Mohegan Sun and DraftKings. What’s more, PokerStars Pennsylvania is, currently, the only online operator in the state.
These variables make a like-for-like comparison difficult. However, with almost $2 million more in monthly earnings, it suggests online poker in Pennsylvania is in a positive place right now.
Monopoly Helps PokerStars Pennsylvania
The challenge for local operators will be sustaining the current level of interest. When online poker launched in New Jersey back in 2013, revenue surged. However, since then, playerpools have steadily decreased and that’s caused poker revenue to drop significantly.
Whatever the future holds, PokerStars Pennsylvania is thriving right now. Going live in Nov. 2019, the site has already hosted a $1 million guaranteed series, much to the delight of local players. Indeed, as players anted up en masse, PokerStars increased the festival’s total guarantee to $1.2 million.
In the end, the Pennsylvania Championship of Online Poker (PACOOP) prizepool surpassed $1.5 million. PokerStars will now look to build on this momentum as it bids to remain the top name for online poker in Pennsylvania.
