The European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final’s €50,000 ($57,600) Super High Roller came down to an all-German finale on Monday thanks to Fabian Quoss and Ole Schemion.
The two high stakes pros are no strangers to tournaments costing in excess of $10,000 and their confidence shone through as the final selection of luminaries fell away on the final table on Sunday.
Attracting a total of 54 players and eight rebuys for a combined total of 62 entrants, the Super High Roller was a mix of bets, bluffs and bravado as the action played out on Sunday.
Over the course of the 17-hour session the likes of Jason Mercier, Mike Watson and Faraz Jaka all fell by the wayside while Quoss and Schemion stormed to the top of the leaderboard.
With Schemion fresh off a $1,807,078 win in the EPT Grand Final €100,000 ($115,200) Super High Roller just days earlier, it looked as though he was going to be the man to beat in the finale.
In fact, as the end of the day closed in and Steve O’Dwyer, Fedor Holz and Aidyn Auyezkanov lost their chips to the German duo, it was Schemion who entered the forced break with the chip lead.
Schemion’s Roll Can’t Beat Quoss
However, after resuming play on Monday, it was Quoss who gradually took control of the match. Starting the session with just under 3.5 million chips less than Schemion, Quoss managed to use a few all-in moves to gain some traction.
That momentum was enough to prompt talk of a deal and, by the time the negotiations had finished, it was Schemion who took the lion’s share of the prize pool and $988,008, while Quoss secured $920,710.
With $57,600 and an EPT Grand Final trophy left to play for, the final flurry of action saw Quoss go for broke and eventually best Schemion when his Ad Qs maintained its pre-flop lead over Kc 5c.
After the board ran out As 4h 8d Qc 3s, Quoss raked in the remainder of Schemion’s chips to claim another major title and take his lifetime tournament earnings to an impressive $9,511,045.
One for O’Dwyer
As well as Germany’s two leading lights putting on a dazzling display on the final table, Steve O’Dwyer managed to take the top spot on the EPT Season 12 Player of the Year race.
Before the latest super high roller the American-Irish pro trailed Mike McDonald in the rankings.
However, after making the final table and finishing ninth for $112,697, O’Dwyer secured enough points to overtake his Canadian rival and move into pole position with just a few events left in the title race.
