2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker has become the latest celebrity to open up during a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session.
Kicking off on October 26, the AMA also featured WSOP commentator Norman Chad and reporter Keith Romer. Being the poster boy for poker’s ability to turn dreams into a reality, Reddit users wanted to know what Moneymaker has done to improve his game since winning a WSOP bracelet.
“I have done a lot to improve my game over the years. I worked with the number one online player in the world as my coach several years ago. I worked with a mental coach on tilt issues and patience. Watched videos at Run it Once and spent some time in Doug Polk’s lab,” Moneymaker wrote.
Delving deeper into the topic of how to succeed as a poker pro, the Hall of Fame nominee said that staying away from casino games was important.
“It’s not easy, honestly, but once you start working hard on your poker game, it makes it easy to stay away from the dark side. Putting in all that effort to play better poker can be undone quickly in the pit. I still dabble in the pit but limit it to a few hundred bucks per trip,” the American wrote during the AMA.
As well as dishing out advice to aspiring pros, Moneymaker was happy to recount some of the more interesting encounters he’s had since become a world champion. When asked what his best story was, he gave readers an overview of a game where players weren’t the only casualties.
“One night I was playing against Nick Binion, Benny Binion and Sam grizzle. We played $20k heads-up matches and I walked out with all the cheddar. Unfortunately, six dealers were fired that night. Nick fired a dealer every time I won a match,” wrote Moneymaker.
As is often the case with social media question and answer sessions, one poster couldn’t resist needling the PokerStars representative. Picking up on comments made by Daniel Negreanu about rake increases at PokerStars, the Reddit user wanted to get Moneymaker’s opinion on the matter.
“Do you also feel more rake is better,” wrote JanMichaelVincent83.
Seeing how much criticism Negreanu has received since commenting on the issue, Moneymaker decline to answer. Despite the attempted needle, the discussion as a whole was productive and served as a neat accompaniment to ESPN’s recent 30 for 30 featuring Moneymaker.
