The 2021 WPT Montreal main event gets underway on January 17 but, due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, it will take place online.
As it did in 2020, Partypoker will host the WPT’s latest series. This time around, there will be three main events at three buy-in levels, as well as a selection of side events.
Day 1A of the $3,200 WPT Montreal main event starts on January 17. Those involved will be playing for the title and a $2 million guarantee.
Day 1B will take place a week later on January 24 before Day 2 and Day 3 whittle the field down to a final table. The finale is set for January 27 when one player will become the first WPT champion of 2021.
The main event winner will also receive a $15,000 seat in the next Tournament of Champions, plus a $2,500 expenses package. As a final honor, the winner’s name will be engraved on the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup trophy.
As well as offering something for poker’s elite (and satellite qualifiers), WPT Montreal will feature mini and micro main events. The former will cost $320, the latter $33.
Both of these are another chance for recreational players to win their very own WPT title when they otherwise might not have been able to.
For all the disruption COVID-19 has caused, it’s also created new opportunities. The WPT is regarded as one of poker’s elite tournament providers. That means its titles are hotly contested by the game’s finest.
However, since it’s been forced to offer MTTs online, it’s been easier to offer MTTs at additional levels.
Indeed, the logistical issues of hosting live events aren’t present online. Therefore, the WPT and Partypoker have been able to devise a schedule that has something for everyone.
In line with this, WPT Montreal will also feature Omaha events, high rollers, and a masters tournament between January 17 and February 1.
